How does this test work?
A transducer sends sound waves into the body and receives returning echoes to form images. When Doppler measurements are included, they provide information about blood flow. The requested exam determines the body area and technique used.
When might this test be considered?
Your clinician decides whether the test is appropriate for your symptoms and medical history.
- Abdominal or pelvic concerns
- Thyroid or other soft-tissue evaluation
- Blood-flow assessment when ordered
What happens during the test?
- For most external scans, you lie on an exam table while gel is applied to the area.
- A sonographer moves a small probe over your skin and may apply gentle pressure.
- The time needed depends on the type and extent of your scan.
How should I prepare?
Preparation depends on the exam. You may be asked to fast or arrive with a full bladder. Follow your care team's specific instructions and wear comfortable clothing.
How are results interpreted?
A physician reviews the images and sends a report to your ordering provider, who explains the findings and any next steps.
What are the limitations?
Air, gas and bone can limit what ultrasound shows. An inconclusive scan does not necessarily settle the cause of symptoms; your clinician may recommend another view or imaging method.
Comfort and safety
Standard diagnostic ultrasound uses no ionizing radiation. External scanning is generally noninvasive, although pressure over a tender area can be uncomfortable. Tell the sonographer if an area is painful.
Common questions about Ultrasound
Should I fast or drink water before my scan?
Preparation varies by exam. Follow the specific instructions for your ordered scan rather than applying another patient's fasting or bladder instructions.
Does a sonographer's comment replace the report?
The images require formal interpretation. Discuss the report and any recommended follow-up with the clinician who requested the examination.
